Gas outburst with sediments because of tetrahydrofuran hydrate dissociation

چکیده
Methane hydrate (MH) is a new energy resource in the 21 century. But the dissociation of MH from sediments during the MH exploration or oil/gas exploration under a hydrate layer accompanied by the softening of soils and formation of excess pore gas pressure may lead to ground failures and environmental disasters. In this study, experiments on modeling the weakening and failure of the sediment by heat-induced dissociation of tetrahydrofuran (THF) hydrate were presented. The failure mode of gas outburst was observed. Gas outbursts is a process where gas and soils in hydrate-dissociation zone burst out after the continuous skeleton of over-layer is fractured during the expansion of the dissociation zone and the formation of gas zone and excess pore gas pressure. An analytical method is presented by decoupling heat transfer and soil deformation. The geometrical and mechanical similarities for gas outburst are obtained. An empirical criterion for the occurrence of outburst is proposed using the theory of thermal conduction, rigid plastic mechanics, and the experimental data. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Observations related to tetrahydrofuran and methane hydrates for laboratory studies of hydrate-bearing sediments
[1] The interaction among water molecules, guest gas molecules, salts, and mineral particles determines the nucleation and growth behavior of gas hydrates in natural sediments. Hydrate of tetrahydrofuran (THF) has long been used for laboratory studies of gas hydrate-bearing sediments to provide close control on hydrate concentrations and to overcome the long formation history of methane hydrate...

Direct measurements of the dissociation behaviors of pure methane and ethane hydrates trapped in sintered tetrahydrofuran hydrate through a temperature ramping method showed that the tetrahydrofuran hydrate controls dissociation of the gas hydrates under thermodynamic instability at temperatures above the melting point of ice.

A two-dimensional pore-network model based on invasion percolation is used to study the patterns obtained from the release of methane during the dissociation of methane hydrates (without including dissociation kinetics) caused by a sudden pressure reduction in the system below the hydrate equilibrium pressure. The concept of the critical gas saturation S(gc) (volume fraction of the gas phase at...

Based on currently available data from site measurements in the Shenhu Area of the South China Sea, methane hydrate dissociation behavior by depressurization is studied in a one-dimensional experimental apparatus. According to time variation of temperature, resistance and gas production, the hydrate dissociation process is divided into three stages: free gas release, rapid dissociation and grad...
